S. Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Belagavi is headed by a Director who is an executive head to implement the decisions of the Governing council. The Governing council is headed by the Secretary to Government, Department of Commerce and Industries, Government of Karnataka duly supported by eminent members from different sectors.

S. Nijalingappa Sugar Institute, Belagavi is set up with an initial grant of Rs. 500.00 lakhs from the state Government and subsequent annual grants. To strengthen the institute and to enable to provide high quality service, guidance, assistance, it is proposed to enroll all sugar mills in the state as members by collecting membership fees and annual subscription fees.

Assistance from other sources :
Initially it was proposed to collect Rs. 2.00 per tonne of sugarcane crushed from sugar mills in Karnataka. But considering the financial position and on the request of the sugar mills it is proposed to collect Re.1/- per tonne of sugarcane crushed.

It is also planned to get assistance from Government of India through the Department of Food and Agriculture, Indian Council for Agriculture Research, National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Biotechnology, Indian Council of Agriculture and Scientific Research etc.

It is intended to get financial assistance from State Government Departments like Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Zilla Panchayats and technical support from Universities of Agriculture Sciences in state.

ASSETS OF THE INSTITUTE:
To carry out research and development in sugarcane the Government of Karnataka has allotted 143.31 acres of land to the institute. The details of which are as under.

At present the Institute has developed lands at Zadshahapur and Yaragatti where in different high yielding varieties of sugarcane are grown and supplied to the farmers as well as the sugar factories.

The Institute possesses 3 A. 12 G. of land at Laxmi Tek, Belagavi. A building measuring 30,000 sq. ft. has been constructed and the Administrative office, Soil Testing, Sugarcane Juice Analysis and Sugar Technology laboratories have been set up.
